(KTLA) – A Northern California company that sells adult novelty products is voluntarily recalling two chocolate products found to contain potentially “life-threatening” amounts of prescription drug ingredients for erectile dysfunction, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

“The products have been found to contain undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients, sildenafil and tadalafil,” according to an FDA news release. Sildenafil and tadalafil, known by the brand names Viagra and Cialis, respectively, can be particularly dangerous for men who take nitrates for cardiac conditions.

“Use of products with undeclared active ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil may pose a threat to consumers because the active ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening,” the release stated.

The RFID tags for Viagra labels work by the same mechanisms as passes that allow cars to drive through tollbooths without stopping, Jordon said. The tags contain circuitry that is activated when it is close to a corresponding antenna. Once it is “woken up,” the tag communicates a number to the antenna, which relays it to a computerized database, where the number is verified. These readers can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, Jordan said. But he added that each facility would only need one reader at first.
